The Name Game: Greta Jade Devine

|| Greta’s Bow: Little Poppy Co || Greta’s Blanket: June & January || Robe: Plum Pretty Sugar || Necklace: Made by Mary ||We went to the hospital with two solid girl names, that we absolutely loved: Sarah Jade, and Jade Olivia. I thought that once this baby was born, that I would see her and one of the names would instantly click! But it didn’t. After she was born, Brad announced “It’s a girl!” and everyone in the delivery room started saying “Ohhh it’s Sarah!” and my first thought was ‘She is not Sarah.’ hahah! It was the strangest feeling to look at her, and feel absolutely confused about what to call her! Brad and I got sent to our discharge room, and we wrote both of the names on our white board. I told Brad “Well all I know, is that after she was born, I felt so strongly that she’s not a Sarah.” So Brad trusted my motherly instinct (haha), and we ruled out Sarah – Leaving us with the name Jade Olivia! We made the decision fairly quick, and started telling our family and friends that was her name. So for the first two days we called her “Baby Jade” — but for some reason, it felt like I was forcing it, every time I called her Jade! Lucy kept forgetting her name too, it didn’t come naturally for her to call her Jade! When we’d ask her what her little sisters name was, she would say “Baby Sarah” even though we had told her multiple times that her name was Jade. Ha! I seriously tossed and turned over her name all night, that second night! The next morning was the day that we needed to fill out the birth certificate and go home, but I told Brad that I was feeling unsure about her name… And he felt the same way, too! We started calling her Sarah, and that wasn’t really clicking either! We sat in the hospital for a few hours trying to figure out her name. I wanted to have it figured out before we went home, mainly for Lucy’s sake! I wanted her to know what to call her baby sister. We ended up leaving the hospital with a blank birth certificate and not feeling sold on either name. A day rolled by where we called her ‘baby’, and then the name Greta sparked back into my head! Greta was a name that I lovvvvved, but Brad quickly shot down a couple months ago so we hadn’t really considered it. I brought it back to the table of name options, and to my surprise, Brad loved it! We looked at her, and It just clicked! She’s Greta! I’m so happy that we took the time to figure out a name that really suits her. Now we’re just trying to explain to Lucy why our baby had a different name for three days. 😉

Of course I like the name Sarah, but no hard feelings 😉 Coincidentally, we liked the name Hailey with our first back in 2008, but then Margaret just felt right. I love Greta Jade, for what it's worth.

Isn't picking names so hard? It's such a commitment and then they are stuck with it. I always worry if my child will like it later.

By the way, I loved your delivery video. Thanks for sharing!

It is so neat that so much of your family wanted and was able to be there. I do like to think of those on the other side that might be watching, invested in our growing family.

I love that we get these feelings about what's right for our kids — especially something as important as a name — because otherwise it would be such a shot in the dark haha. About everything. Thanks for sharing, and great job being willing to wait for the right name to come to you.
